In Their Own Words
What Residents and Families Tell Us
These are honest accounts — not polished endorsements. Some people had concerns before moving in. Some took a few weeks to settle. That is all real, and it is part of how we think things should work.

What People Say About Life Here
Lam Yuk-Kwan
Daughter of a resident, Sham Shui Po
"My mother moved in seven months ago. She was reluctant at first — she thought it would feel like a hospital ward. It is nothing like that. The staff know her name, they know she likes her tea without sugar, and they do not rush her. The mahjong afternoons have given her a regular group of people she actually looks forward to seeing."

Wong Chi-Ho
Resident, previously of Wong Tai Sin
"I joined the Companion Circles first, just to see what it was like. I was not planning to move in. The card sessions on Wednesday afternoons were good — real card games, not just sitting around. After three months I decided I would rather be here full time. The cooking is better than I expected and I see more people in a week than I did in a month living alone."

Chan Kam-Yi
Son of a resident, Kowloon City
"I was worried about the calligraphy sessions — my father's hands shake. Lau Wai-Keung sat with him the first two sessions and was very patient. By the third session my father was doing it independently. He has not practised calligraphy in thirty years. Watching him come home from the studio with something he had made was not something I expected."

Ho Mei-Fong
Resident, previously of Kwun Tong
"The opera afternoons are the best part of my week. Wai-Keung knows the repertoire very well and he explains the context, which makes it much more interesting. I had not heard certain pieces since my mother used to play recordings in our flat when I was a child. I did not expect to feel that kind of connection here, but I do."

Yu Tak-Shing
Family member, Diamond Hill
"The pricing is genuinely straightforward. We had a long conversation with Chan Mei-Ling before my aunt moved in. She wrote down all the costs on a piece of paper and went through each one. There were no surprises in the first bill. For a family managing finances carefully, that reliability matters a great deal."

Tang Wai-Ling
Resident, Cultural Studio plan
"I come to the studio three afternoons a week. Sometimes I do calligraphy. Sometimes I just sit and listen to the music session. No one asks why I am there or whether I am doing enough. That freedom is unusual. I have tried other community programmes and they always felt like something was being managed or directed. This does not."

How It Went
Three Stories in More Detail
Story One
From Reluctance to Settled Routine
The Starting Point
A 78-year-old woman living alone in Sham Shui Po. Her daughter was concerned about her isolation but the mother had no interest in "moving into a home." She agreed to try Companion Circles as a day programme, with the understanding she could stop at any point.
What Changed
Over six weeks, she developed a regular group of four other residents she played cards with. Staff noticed she began arriving early and staying later. She mentioned to the team that she had been sleeping better and eating more regularly since she had somewhere to be each week.
Where She Is Now
She has been on the full Residence Plan for four months. Her daughter visits on Saturday mornings and often joins a studio session. The earlier reluctance has not entirely vanished — she still calls it "the place" rather than home — but she stays.
Story Two
Returning to Something Left Behind
The Starting Point
A 82-year-old man who had practised calligraphy seriously in his forties and fifties but had not touched a brush in nearly twenty-five years. His family had no particular expectations when he enrolled on the Cultural Studio plan — it was one of several things they tried.
What Changed
The programme coordinator spent extra time with him in the first two sessions, adapting the exercises to suit his current physical range. Within a month he was producing work he was pleased with. He began talking about specific characters and styles, which was something his family had not heard him discuss in a long time.
Where He Is Now
He attends studio sessions four times a week. Several of his pieces hang in the common area at his family's request. His son says he seems more like himself than he has in years.
Story Three
Managing the Practical Together
The Starting Point
A family with three adult children spread across different districts of Hong Kong. Their mother lived alone and increasingly found household management — meals, laundry, keeping track of things — exhausting rather than manageable. The family needed an arrangement that would also be affordable.
What Changed
The all-in Residence Plan at HK$3,720 per month covered what three separate arrangements would have cost significantly more to replicate. The transparent billing meant the three siblings could plan together without surprises. The family shifted from managing a logistics problem to simply visiting.
Where She Is Now
Eight months in. She joined Companion Circles within the first two weeks and has a regular group she has tea with most mornings. Her children take turns visiting. The family calls the decision straightforward in hindsight — at the time it felt harder.
